Like diabetic or heart disease patient, teaching people in drug addiction treatment for behavioral changes, and drug addicts often take some medications as part of their drug addiction treatment.

In behavioral therapies included counseling, psychotherapy, and  support groups or family therapy. Medication offer help in decreasing withdrawal symptoms and desire of drug and blocking the effect of the drug. In addition, research reveal that treatment of heroin addiction ,use of methadone in an adequate amount of dose plus behavioral therapy decrease mortality and many other health related problems associated with heroin addiction.

They tend to be more drug addiction  treatment, better results. Many drug addict patients require  some other services such as medical and mental health services and prevention of HIV aids. Patients who remain in treatment for more than 3 months were generally better than those who stay less time in center. Patients who undergo artificial medically assisted withdrawal to decrease discomfort but not receiving  any  next treatment, done about the same in terms of drug use, as in those who have never been treated. Over the past 25 years, research  has revealed that treatment works to decrease drug input and crime by drug addicts.

The goal of all drug addiction treatment is to allow the addicts to get abstain from any type of drug , but the quick goal is to reduce drug intake , and give improvement in  the patient's ability to function and decreasing the complications in relation with medical and social consequences of addiction.

There are several different types of drug addiction  treatment for addicts. Short term therapies last less than six months and include home treatment , drug therapy and without drug outpatient therapy. In long term treatment included , for instance , an outpatient methadone maintenance treatment for addicts of opiates and home therapeutic drug addiction treatment.

In maintenance treatment for heroin addicts, people in drug addiction treatment are taken a dose of a synthetic opiate orally, usually methadone hydrochloride or levo-alpha-acetyl methadol , administered at a dose and is enough to block the effects of heroin and stable performance, Commonwealth non euphoric physiological desires of opiates. In this stable state, the patient is able to extricate itself from the search for drugs and other criminal behavior, and with adequate counseling and social services, become a productive member of their community.

Without drug outpatient treatment ,not included medications and encompasses a large variety of programs for drug addicts who come in  a clinic as in regular intervals. Most programs include individual and group sessions of counseling . Patients enrolled in these drug addiction treatment programs are addicts of drugs other than opiates or opioid addicts for whom maintenance therapy is not advised , as those who have a stable life with well-integration and short history of substance addiction .

Therapeutic communities are highly structured programs in which patients stay in a home, usually six to twelve  months. In therapeutic community includes patients with a relatively long history of drug addiction in serious criminal activity and serious impairment in social functioning. The objective of the therapeutic community is on the rehabilitation of the patient to a drug free lifestyle without crime.

In the short-term residential programs, often called  chemical dependency unit , usually based on the Minnesota Model of treatment for alcohol addicts. These programs involve a three to six weeks treatment in the hospital  followed by extended outpatient treatment or participation in support groups in 12 steps, like  Narcotics Anonymous or Cocaine Anonymous. Chemical dependency programs for drug addicts arose in the private sector in the mid of 80's with the insured cocaine , alcohol as primary patients. Nowadays, as private provider benefits decreasing, more programs are increasing their services to patients funded by the state.

Methadone maintenance programs are generally more effective at retaining patients with opiate addiction than are therapeutic communities, which in turn are more successful than external patient programs that give psychotherapy and good counseling. In various methadone programs, which give a methadone at high dose ( typically a minimum dose of 60 mg.) They have better retention rates. In addition, they provide other services like counseling, treatment and care and methadone , usually get better results than programs that offer minimal services.

Programs of drug addiction treatment in prisons  succeed in prevention of the return of patients to criminal activities, especially if they relate to community programs that continue treatment when the client leaves prison. Some of the most successful drug addiction treatment programs have declined the rearrest rate by a quarter to half. In instance , the Delaware Model  an ongoing research of  treatment of drug addict prisoner including a framework of therapeutic community, a community news therapeutic work and community-based rehabilitation decreased the probability of rearrest by 57 % and decline the likelihood of a return to drug addiction by 37 %.
